Handy Home Hints

Crispy greens

To bring limp greens, celery and carrots back to life, place them in a bowl of iced water for around 30 minutes. Also works well for herbs like coriander and basil.

Fruit-fly trap

Take a glass, pour a little apple cider vinegar in and add couple of drops of dishwashing liquid. Those pesky fruit-flies will be attracted to the smell and should dive right in.

Good grip

Have a jar that’s hard to open? Wrap a large rubber band around the rim of the lid to give you extra grip.

Pizza stone cleaning

Pizza stones are porous so avoid using water and detergent as they will be absorbed. Instead, scrape over any burnt areas with a wire brush or metal spatula. Lay down damp paper towels first to catch any residue.

3 uses for eucalyptus oil

  1. Bin deodorant - leave a cotton wool ballsoaked in eucalyptus oil under the bin liner.
  2. Removing sticky labels - coat the area in eucalyptus oil and let it soak in for a while. Then rub with a cloth to remove residue.
  3. Wound care - after cleaning the area, dab neat on minor cuts, bites and scrapes.

Spotless skirtings

Use a dryer sheet to clean skirting boards. The anti-static properties will help repel dust, keeping them cleaner for longer.

Dishwasher DIY

Out of dishwasher tablets? Put 1 tbs bicarb and 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil into the dispenser, and wash on a hot cycle. Use this method for 1-2 cycles only, until you can re-stock on tablets.

Ant-free pet food

Place your pet’s food bowl inside a larger bowl filled with water. This creates a moat to keep ants out.
