The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy provides developmental drama programs for children aged 3-17 years. Taking part will help your child develop essential life skills and to explore their creative side. And most importantly of all - it’s great fun!

Kindy drama for ages 3-5 years

The Kindy Drama Program focuses on language development and helping to develop important life skills, such as:

  • Taking turns
  • Sharing
  • Listening
  • Following instructions
  • Sequencing & memory skills
  • Vocalising emotions

Each drama lesson is carefully devised to captivate the children’s interests and stimulate their learning.

Activities include:

  • Storytelling
  • Dramatic play
  • Speech training
  • Creative movement
  • Songs

For this age group, parents are encouraged to stay and participate in each class, or simply watch from the sidelines. Pre-schoolers and their parents love the drama program and find it a wonderful introduction to drama.

Lower primary drama for ages 5-8 years

The Lower Primary Drama Program consists of a series of fun-filled drama activities which encourage confidence and self-esteem.

The developmental lower primary drama class programme provides young children with unique opportunities to develop:

  • Clear speech
  • Fluent speech delivery
  • Pleasing social skills

Children who mix well with others find it easier to make friends and adjust to new situations. They find school an enjoyable adventure.

Upper primary drama for ages 9-12 years

The main thrust of the Upper Primary Drama Program is developmental drama. In a fun-filled atmosphere, young people can develop ongoing confidence, self-esteem and verbal communication skills. It is designed to help each child achieve invaluable skills in a warm and positive learning environment.

  • Spontaneous improvisation
  • Structured improvisation

At the end of each year, they all take part in a short, scripted drama production which is performed for parents and friends.

Youth drama for ages 12-17 years

Available to all students attending secondary school, this dynamic program attracts a wide range of young people - whether they want to increase their confidence and speaking ability, or pursue a career in theatre and media.

This program encourages confident and articulate communication as well as experience in theatre arts.

This includes:

  • Spontaneous improvisation
  • Voice production
  • Small group improvisation
  • Mini-scrips
  • Character analysis
  • Open-ended dialogue
  • Theatre games
  • Radio plays
  • Quick-fire dialogue
  • Monologues
  • Structured scenes

In the final term of each year, students begin work on a scripted production which is performed for a public audience. This is always a highlight of the year and reflects the talents and skills of students and their teachers.
