Are you storing your jewellery correctly?

We all love a bit of bling – but to keep it looking beautiful and sparkling, you must store it properly. Here’s how to keep your lovely jewellery looking like a million dollars (no matter how much it cost).

Keep items separate

Never store all your jewellery together. Friction from other pieces can cause scratching (particularly on gold jewellery), and if gemstones get knocked together, they can chip. Store items separately in their original boxes, fabric jewellery pouches, or even zip lock bags.

Things to avoid

  • Avoid leaving your jewellery on chemically treated surfaces or on wood which can stain or speed up the tarnishing process.
  • Do not store or keep your jewellery in the sunlight. The colour of gemstones will become dull when exposed to too much light.
  • Avoid excess moisture. Over time moisture can cause your jewellery to tarnish. You can add some chalk to your jewellery box to soak up any moisture, use silica packs, or put each piece in a zip lock bag and squeeze out the air before sealing.
  • Keep pearls away from plastic as it contains chemicals that can cause them to deteriorate (so no plastic containers).

Stop tangles

Before storing, keep necklaces tangle-free by feeding one end of the chain through a straw and then fastening.

Give it a wipe

At the end of the day, give your jewellery a quick wipe with an anti-tarnish cloth before storing it away. This will get rid of any moisture, oils, or dust.
