Do you know what’s lurking in your carpet?

Researchers have found carpets can contain as much as 200,00 bacteria per square inch - which is roughly 4,000 times dirtier than the average toilet seat! Now that we’ve grossed you out, here’s what you can do.

Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting or a few rugs, vacuuming at least once per week is a must. And if you have pets and/or kids you should do it more frequently.

  • Make sure you have a high-quality vacuum cleaner with strong suction.
  • Vacuum slowly and go over high-traffic areas several times for the best results.
  • Use a lint roller for quick clean-up of crumbs.
  • Grab a rubber edged squeegee or pop on a rubber washing up glove and run it over the carpet to collect pet hair.
  • Freshen and brighten carpet with a liberal sprinkling of baking soda every month. Let it sit for an hour or so to absorb oily stains and odours and then vacuum it away.
  • Clean up spills and stains as soon as they happen.
  • Have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once every 12 months.
