If you've let your pool maintenance fall by the wayside over winter, it's likely the pool water isn't as clean and healthy as it needs to be.

Over winter, rain dilutes pool chemicals, which can turn pool water green and help algae to take hold.

  • Thoroughly clean the pool; brush your pool's walls, which helps remove algae and loosen dirt.

  • Turn your pump on (if it isn't already running) to help clear debris and dirt from water.

  • Check your equipment for leaks.

  • Have your pool water tested. The results will show what it needs for spring swimming.

  • Empty the skimmer basket when full.

  • Check the pool's water level is halfway up the skimmer box opening.

  • If your filter cartridge needs a clean, give it a good wash with the hose.

  • If you have a sand filter, set it to backwash to flush it out (don't forget to return it to its normal setting).

  • Turn the pool lights on to make sure they are working and have them repaired if there are any problems.

  • If your pool has turned green over winter, contact your local pool service for help and advice.
