The right way to recycle your empty aerosol cans
Recycling rules were amended a while ago and you can no longer place aerosol cans in any of your kerbside bins or bulk waste verge collections.
Aerosol cans are classed as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), and they can pose a risk to staff and equipment during the process of collecting and separating the contents of your recycling bins.
Good news! They can still be recycled
Please take empty aerosols to a local collection centre near you by searching:
https://www.recyclingnearyou.com.au/
They will be sent off for recycling through Hazardous Household Waste programs.
To dispose of any full or part-full aerosols, contact your council for details of Household Hazardous Waste collections and drop-off sites in your area. There is no charge for this service.
Recycling via Terracycle
Certain types of aerosol containers can be recycled via Terracycle. These are aerosols which have contained air freshener, and hair care products.
Find a Community Collection Hub
To recycle with Terracycle, you can use their website to search for a Community Collection Hub or sign up as a private collector. Postage is free.
Search for a hub at: https://www.terracycle.com/en-AU/ and choose ‘Dish and air care’ and/or ‘Hair care’.
If you cannot find a collection hub near you, you can sign up to become a private collector.
You could get together with a group of friends and neighbours to collect and recycle.
For more information, go to:
or
If you are dropping off to a Community Collection Hub, please ensure your aerosols are completely empty (when you hold down the nozzle no more product comes out) and have their caps on.
