Bullet-proof Plants

Let’s face it, not everyone is blessed with a green thumb, but this shouldn’t stop you from having a great garden. For those less skilled with all things green, we’ve put together a list of ‘bullet-proof’ plants which are low maintenance, require less water and should be easier to keep alive!

Geranium Big Red

This geranium produces bright red flowers all year round and is virtually unkillable! It’s great in pots, or in the garden as long as it doesn’t get too much water.

Aloe Vera

This hardy plant not only looks good but is a useful plant to have around as the gel inside the leaves can be used to cool sunburn. It can be planted outside or will also be happy in a pot inside the house.

Once established, the resillient gazania will cope in the hottest and driest places. Your neglect will be rewarded with vibrant, daisy-like blooms through spring and summer.

These have been around for years and are great for any garden, including coastal areas. The glossy foliage provides year-round colour and they can survive just about any climate and soil condition. Best in full sun.

Snake Plant

Also known as mother-in-law’s tongue this plant will thrive on neglect. It will be happy indoors or out.

Star Jasmine

Fast-growing, hardy climber with glossy, dark green foliage. It produces small, white, fragrant flowers on and off all year, but in summer is covered in blooms. It can also be used as ground cover.

Cosmos come in many colours and varieties, and actually produce more blooms when the soil quality is low. They will need staking in windy conditions, so for ease, plant out of the wind. They grow happily outdoors from seeds scattered around and will self-seed each year, making them the ultimate set-and-forget plant!
