Handy Home Hints

Fur-tastic cleaning

Pop on some washing up gloves and run your hands over your upholstery to pick up pet hair.

DIY drip irrigation

Keep your plants hydrated in hot weather by filling an empty plastic water or soda bottle with water. Punch a few holes in the lid and push into the soil at an angle.

Easy-peasy popsicles

Cut a slit into the foil lids of small tubs of yoghurt. Insert a pop stick and freeze for easy, no mess icy poles.

Excellent eggs

Boiled eggs will last for up to 4 days in the fridge. To keep track, write the date they were boiled on the shell.

Versatile lemons

  1. Scatter lemon peel to keep away stray cats.
  2. Add lemon peel to your bag of brown sugar to keep it soft.
  3. Remove sweat, mildew and rust marks on cotton fabric by making a paste of lemon juice and salt. Rub it in and leave for half an hour, before washing as normal.

Make your own laundry liquid

  • 4L of distilled or filtered water
  • 1 cup Velvet soap, grated
  • ½ cup washing soda
  • ½ cup salt
  • Essential oils (optional)

Combine 1L water, soap, washing soda and salt in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the soap is completely dissolved. Let the mixture cool a little and add any essential oils for fragrance (optional). Pour mixture into a bucket, then fill with distilled or filtered water. Stir to combine. When cool, store in a sealed container (we reused empty 2L vinegar bottles). Shake bottles before use and use approx ¼ cup per load.
