Channel your inner mad scientist and make Magic Sand

Also known as aqua sand, this is a fun activity and a bit of science all rolled into one. It’s sand that never gets wet – and as a bonus, it only needs two ingredients!

How does it work?

When ordinary sand gets wet, the result is a clumpy mess, but Magic Sand stays dry. The secret is water repelling spray which keeps the sand dry so you can create underwater sculptures. When you’re finished and pour away the water – the sand is still dry.

You will need:

  1. A can of Scotchgard (or another brand) protection spray (not the cleaning spray)
  1. Craft sand – there are lots of different colours available.

You will also need a couple of baking trays and some aluminium foil.

  • Line the baking tray with aluminium foil.
  • Spread out the sand in a thin layer.
  • Spray a good amount of protection spray over the sand until it is wet, but without any pools of excess liquid.
  • Wait for it to dry.
  • Stir up the sand or lightly shake.
  • Smooth out into a thin layer again and repeat the process.
  • Repeat this step another two or three times.

Before you use your magic sand, it’s a good idea to test it. Put a small amount of the sand onto a large spoon and drizzle with water. If the sand absorbs the water, you’ll need another coat or two. If it repels the water and stays dry, it’s good to go!

Grab a clear container and fill it with water. Pour in your magic sand to make amazing, colourful sculptures.

You could make large batches in different coloured sand and share with friends or put it into jars for a great DIY gift.

Always supervise the kids when they’re playing with the sand in case they try to eat it!
