How to remove pet smells in your home

They are part of our family but can sometimes leave behind a bit of a smell (we’re talking about your pets, not your partner or children!). Here are 8 tips to remove the pet smells from your home.

Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!

Many pets shed hair, but vacuuming the floor is just the beginning. You should also vacuum your upholstered furniture, your cushions, behind furniture and in all the areas where you pet likes to hang out. Even if your pet doesn’t shed much, you’ll be surprised how much you pick up.

Carpet cleaning

Steam clean your carpets with pet-friendly chemicals or hire a professional to do it. You would be horrified if you knew what’s lurking in your carpets!

Wash and dry

It’s important to regularly wash all of the items that your pet uses on a daily basis. This can include pet bed covers, cushion covers on furniture (if they're laundry safe), pet blankets, and bed sheets and covers (if your pet is allowed on your bed).

Clean toys, bowls, collars and leads

All these items can easily hold on to odour and bacteria, so it is important to regularly wash all of this stuff, too.

Wash them regularly

If you struggle to wash your pet yourself, have them professionally washed. It will make life so much easier. If you can wash them at home, make a note in your calendar to remind you to do it regularly.

Get some air!

Get some fresh air into your house regularly by opening windows and doors.

Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is a fantastic odour neutralizer. Just sprinkle some on your pet’s bed, let it sit for a few minutes, then vacuum it up.

Vinegar

Vinegar is also an amazing natural cleaning option for more serious pet odours. Try using vinegar (diluted with a bit of water) in a spray bottle and (depending on what they are made from – check first) spray on carpets or floors. Or use in combination with sodium bicarb for an extra powerful, odour-eliminating punch.
