Whatever you prefer to call them, when it comes to creating a cosy and comfortable bed, choosing the right quilt/doona/duvet is the key!

May 30, 2024

There are so many options available these days and it can be a bit confusing, but understanding the differences in materials, TOG ratings, and fillings can help find the perfect one for you.

TOG ratings

TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and is a measure of warmth. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer it is.

  • 4.5 TOG: Light and perfect for summer or warm climates.

  • 7.5 TOG: Ideal for spring and autumn when the weather is mild.

  • 10.5 TOG: A good all-season option, suitable for most climates year-round.

  • 13.5 TOG: Great for winter or for those who feel the cold easily.

  • 15 TOG: Ultra-warm for very cold climates or chilly sleepers.

Types of fillings

Down

Down fillings are made from the soft feathers of ducks or geese. They are incredibly lightweight and provide excellent insulation. A down quilt/doona/duvet feels fluffy and luxurious, perfect for those cold winter nights. However, they can be a bit pricey and may not be suitable for allergy sufferers.

Feather

Feather fillings are heavier than down but still offer good warmth and insulation. They tend to be more affordable than pure down and can give a slightly firmer feel. Feather duvets can also be a good choice if you like a bit more weight from your covers while you sleep.

Some are a mixture of feathers and down

Synthetic

Synthetic fillings, such as polyester, are hypoallergenic and often more affordable than natural fillings. They’re easy to care for and can be machine washed and dried. Synthetic fillings are also great for those with allergies.

Wool

Wool fillings are naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, making them a good choice for regulating body temperature. They provide warmth without overheating and are naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant.

Cotton

Cotton fillings are breathable and lightweight, ideal for those who prefer a cooler sleep environment. They are also hypoallergenic for allergy sufferers.

  • For hot sleepers: If you tend to get hot at night, opt for a lighter TOG rating, such as a 4.5 or 7.5 TOG, with a cotton or synthetic filling that allows for better airflow.

  • For cold sleepers: If you feel the cold easily, a higher TOG rating like 13.5 or 15 will keep you warm and toasty. Down or feather fillings are excellent for their superior insulation properties.

  • For allergy sufferers: Choose a synthetic or wool filling. These materials are hypoallergenic and can help minimise allergic reactions.
