Become a volunteer reader at your local primary school

If you have some spare time on your hands, why not volunteer at your local school to help those children who may be struggling with their reading. You can make a real difference. Here’s why.

If you are a parent or grandparent looking to get more involved in your child's school or simply want to help your local community, being a reading volunteer can be a great way to help support the education of future generations.

The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. But some children take to reading and some struggle, for lots of different reasons. A little extra help can make all the difference to a child by helping them to learn to love reading and reach their potential.

By reading with them, you can help young kids develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills – as well as a love of reading, language and books. You will also be getting to know the young people in your local community and making some new, small friends!

The benefits of reading for children include:

  • A larger and more extensive vocabulary
  • Improved academic performance
  • Creativity
  • Greater empathy
  • Improved concentration
  • Cognitive development
  • Improved social skills

You could contact your local school directly or visit EdConnect Australia to see whether your local school is part of their volunteer program.

You will also need to complete a Working with Children Check.
