Masters Swimming Clubs

Fitness, friendship, and fun

Riverton Masters Swimming Club is based at the Riverton Leisureplex, High Rd, Riverton. They train on Mondays and Wednesdays (except public holidays) in the heated 50m pool from 7.00pm -8.00pm all year round and are always on the lookout for new members, young and old.

You must be 18 or over, and there is no upper limit! You must also be able to swim 50 metres unaided, but don’t have to be a fast or a strong swimmer.

The advantages of joining the Club include:

  • A safe and managed environment to keep fit, have fun, and make friends
  • Reserved training lanes to suit all levels of swimmers
  • Training programs tailored to suit swimmers’ abilities
  • Stroke correction by qualified coaches
  • Social activities
  • Encouragement for improvement with time trials and distance swims
  • Encouragement to participate in inter-club swim meets and open water swims

Great for fitness

Swimming is a whole of body form of fitness. You are less likely to get injured as it’s low impact, and your muscles and heart get a good workout at the same time. If you enjoy swimming for exercise but don’t want to swim on your own, then come along and join in!  You’ll find that swimming with a group is easier and a lot more enjoyable.

Equipment

Swimmers need to supply their own goggles, swim cap (if desired) and fins, while the Club provides kick boards and pull buoys. Swimmers should also bring a bottle of water to training to avoid dehydration.

Training and coaching

The Club reserves three lanes in the 50m pool for its training sessions and the lanes accommodate fast, intermediate, and slower swimmers. Swimmers generally cover about 1.5km to around 3km during a session, depending on the lane. The training programs are designed to improve swimmers’ fitness and stamina, but members and visitors should only do as much as they are comfortable with.

Generally, coaching occurs on Monday nights and the coach sets a special program for each lane that night, and can provide assistance to members with stroke technique. On Wednesday nights, members generally use pre-prepared training programs (changed from session-to-session so there is variation), one for each of our lanes, or swimmers in a lane might collectively decide on a program. There is no compulsion to undertake a program in full - newer members in particular should do only what they are comfortable with.  The training programs are designed to improve fitness and stamina.

The coach is also available to assist swimmers on request with stroke technique.
