Ants are highly developed social insects who live together in large colonies – so you can be sure that even if you only see one or two – there will be many, many more lurking!
What you can do:
- It’s important to keep your home free of food scraps as much as possible. Use sealed, air-tight containers to store people food and pet food.
- Put any pet food bowls into another shallow container of water to create a ‘moat’ that the ants won’t cross.
- Make sure all surfaces are clean and free of crumbs. Wipe/sweep up spills as soon as possible and clean in and around appliances and rubbish bins.
- Mix a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar in a spray bottle to wipe down counters, workbenches, and other surfaces - ants don’t like the vinegar smell.
- Seal any obvious gaps around doors and windows to make it harder for the ants to get inside your home.
- Make sure there is no left-over food or dirty dishes lying around or the ants will think it’s party time!
- And if they just won’t budge, call your local pest control expert who will know exactly which type of ants you have and how to get rid of them.
