Keep your panels clean
Dirt, dust, bird droppings, and fallen leaves can reduce the efficiency of your solar panels. During autumn and winter, rainfall may help rinse away some of the debris, but it's still a good idea to inspect your panels regularly and have them cleaned if needed.
Optimise energy use
Try shifting high-energy activities (such as using the washing machine, dishwasher, or charging electronic devices) to the middle of the day when your panels produce the most electricity.
As much as possible, run the following appliances during the day:
-
Washing machine, dishwasher or clothes dryer: most machines have a built-in timer so you can choose what time they turn on.
-
Pool pump: set the timer to run during the day.
-
Heating: run heaters as much as possible during sunlight hours and keep heat inside by closing doors and windows.
-
Slow cooker: schedule your evening meal to cook during the day.
-
Electric vehicles: plug in and charge during the day or get a smart meter or app to schedule charging when there is excess solar generation.
Get smart
Use a timer or smart plugs to schedule high-energy usage appliances during the day when your panels are generating the most energy. This can reduce reliance on the grid during the evening.
Trim overhanging branches
In winter, shade from trees and nearby structures can have a greater impact on your solar panel efficiency. Trimming overhanging branches can help ensure your panels receive as much sunlight as possible.
Check your inverter and battery storage
Your solar inverter plays a key role in converting sunlight into usable electricity, so make sure it’s functioning properly. If you have a battery storage system, autumn and winter are a great time to assess its capacity and make sure it’s fully charged for evening use when solar generation drops.
Consider a system upgrade
If your solar system is older, upgrading to more efficient panels or adding a battery storage system could help you make the most of your energy production year-round. Newer technology significantly improves energy efficiency, even on cloudy days.
Get regular professional inspections
During the winter months, it’s good to have your system checked by a professional to ensure it’s working efficiently. They can identify and address any issues caused by weather, such as moisture damage, faulty wiring, or damage to the inverter.
Monitor solar output
Many solar systems have monitoring apps or websites that allow you to track your solar generation in real-time. Regularly check the output to see how much energy you're generating and adjust your energy usage accordingly.
A well-maintained system will not only save you money but also help you contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
