How to clean your pool like a pro

If your pool is looking a bit swamp-like after its winter break, here’s how to get it back to sparkling, just like a pool pro.

  1. Grab your pool net and get rid of anything floating on the surface of your pool.
  1. Next, shock your pool. No, we don’t mean sneaking up behind it and saying ‘Boo!’ You’ll need to use a pool shock product which will kill off any organic matter. It’s best to do this at night as most pool shock products will burn off when exposed to sunlight. Leave the pool running overnight.
  1. Now it’s time to brush. Grab your pool brush and scrub the walls and floor of the pool. This will remove any scum and remaining algae.
  1. Next, attach your automatic pool cleaner if you have one and leave it to do its job – or connect your pool vacuum and vac.
  1. Leave your pool filter running until the water is clear.
  1. Next, clean the filter by backwashing (for a sand filter) or for a cartridge filter, remove it from its housing and use a hose on your lawn to get rid of the dirt and debris that has collected. You might have to clean the filter a few times to get your pool summer ready.
  1. Test the water and add chemicals as necessary to get the water balanced again. Chlorine should be 1-3 ppm and the pH 7.2 - 7.6 and stabiliser 30-50 ppm.
  1. Cover the pool when not in use. This will help to keep it clean (obviously!).
  1. Run your filter for 8 hours a day to remove dirt and organic matter from the water.
  1. If you don’t have a pool vacuum, stir the water up using your brush. Any dirt or debris will (hopefully) get pulled in by the filter, rather than sitting on the floor of the pool.

If you prefer relaxing in your pool rather than cleaning it, call your local pool cleaning professional who will do it all for you!
