Common computer blips (and what to do)

For lots of us, computers are a huge part of daily life (how did we manage before?). But every now and then, they throw a little tantrum, so here are some easy fixes to get things back on track.

Slooooow computer

If your computer takes forever to load, it might have too many programs running at startup, not enough memory (RAM), or too many old files slowing it down. Try turning off programs you don’t need when your computer starts, add more memory if possible, and use the built-in "Disk Cleanup" tool to remove unnecessary files.

Frequent freezing

If your computer keeps freezing, it might be overheating, running too many programs at once, or have a software issue. Keep it dust-free to improve airflow, close unused programs, and check for software updates.

Blue screen of death (BSOD)

A sudden blue screen with error messages usually means something serious, like hardware failure or a system error. Try updating your drivers (the software that helps your computer talk to its parts), checking for viruses, and restarting your computer.

Internet connection problems

If you can’t get online, it could be a problem with your modem, router, or internet provider. Restart your modem and router, check if cables are plugged in properly, and see if your Wi-Fi settings are correct.

Overheating

If your computer gets too hot, it can slow down or shut off unexpectedly. Keep the vents clear of dust, use a cooling pad if you have a laptop, and make sure it has good airflow.

USB device not recognised

If your USB drive, keyboard, or other devices won’t work, try plugging it into a different port, restarting your computer, or updating the software that controls USB connections.

Crashing software

If a program keeps closing by itself, it might be outdated or conflicting with something else. Try reinstalling it, updating it, or undoing recent system changes.

Printer not working

If your printer won’t print, check that it’s properly connected, has paper and ink, and that the printer software (drivers) are up to date.

No sound

If you can’t hear anything, make sure your volume isn’t muted, your speakers or headphones are plugged in properly, and update the sound drivers if needed.

Apps not responding

If a program freezes and won’t close, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on Windows or Command + Option + Esc on a Mac to force quit it. Restarting your computer can also help.

Final tip

Knowing how to fix basic computer problems can save you time and money. But if something is too tricky, don’t be afraid to ask a tech expert for help!
