Before you put anything in your dishwasher, make sure it is dishwasher safe. If you’re unsure, don’t risk it! 8 things you should never put in your dishwasher.
- Fill your dishwasher, but don't overload it or the hot water jets won’t be able to reach everything.
- Scrape heavy residue from dishes but there is no need to rinse!
Top rack (and middle rack if you have one)
For cups, glasses and smaller bowls and plates.
- Turn bowls upside down.
- Tall glasses and tumblers should be placed along the sides, upside down and not touching, with shorter glasses placed towards the centre.
- If the bottoms of certain cups or bowls are slightly concave, it helps to lean them at an angle to avoid collecting dirty water.
- Dishwasher-safe plastics should go on the top rack to avoid warping.
- Place items with the dirty area facing inwards toward the centre of the dishwasher, so it gets more of the spray arm action.
Bottom rack
For pots, pans, larger plates, bowls, and dishes.
- Pots and pans should be loaded in the lower basket where your dishwasher’s most powerful spray jets are positioned. To make the most of your space, lean them at an angle, rather than laying them flat. However, if they have baked on food, lay them flat.
- Make sure they don’t cover other items in the dishwasher or block the spray arm.
- Put larger items at the back and sides.
- Arrange your larger plates and platters vertically and stagger large and small pieces so that they don’t touch each other.
- Oversized items, such as dishwasher-safe cutting boards, should go along the edge of the bottom rack.
Cutlery basket
- Forks and spoons should be put into the basket with the handles down.
- Mix different sized spoons together to avoid ‘nesting’
- Knives should go into the basket with points down for safety.
- Don’t put your sharp, cook’s knives in the dishwasher, as it can blunt the sharp edges.
When finished, unload your bottom rack first so that when you are ready to unload the top rack, left over water won’t splash onto your clean dishes below.
