How to make DIY cleaning products and save hundreds of dollars

The average family spends hundreds of dollars on cleaning products each year because clever marketers would have us believe that you need a specific product for each area of your home. But the truth is, you can make your own products which will also do a great job (and it’s easy).

You will need:

  • Methylated spirits ($5.70 per litre)
  • Sodium bicarbonate ($1.80 for 500g)
  • White vinegar ($1.40 per 2 litres)2.50
  • Liquid soap ($2.50 for 500ml)
  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Lemons
  • Reusable microfibre cloths

All-purpose cleaner recipe 1*

  • 4 cups hot water
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons bi-carb soda
  • Juice of half a lemon (strained)

Place all the ingredients together in a large jug or bowl. Let it sit and cool down then pour into a spray bottle using a funnel. To use, give the bottle a good shake, then spray surfaces and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

All-purpose cleaner recipe 2*

Create a solution of 80% methylated spirit/20% water and add a squirt of dish soap. Stir to mix and add to a spray bottle. This is great for wiping down your bench after cooking as it disinfects as well.

All-purpose cleaners will clean everything from bench tops and fridges to cupboard doors and baths.

*If you have specialist surfaces such as marble, granite, or stone, always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Glass Cleaner

Add a cup of vinegar or half a cup of methylated spirit to a bucket of hot water to clean your windows. Finish with a squeegee. This also works well on mirrors.

Toilet cleaner

• ¾ cup baking soda
• ¾ cup white vinegar
• 10 drops of tea tree oil

This mixture smells lovely and fresh and can get rid of limescale stained toilet bowls.

You can also save money by avoiding disposable products such as cleaning wipes and wood polishing wipes.
