When you make your own dog treats, you know exactly what you are feeding your best friend and you can adjust the portion size if they are getting a bit pudgy!

Recipe 1

½ cup pureed (or mashed) pumpkin

½ cup smooth peanut butter (no sweeteners or sugar)

1 large egg

2 cups wholemeal flour

2 tbsp milk

  • Preheat your oven to 180C
  • Mix the pureed pumpkin, peanut butter, and egg together until combined. Stir in the flour but if the mixture is a bit dry, add some or all of the milk. The texture should be like dough.
  • Roll out the dough to about 6mm thick.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut the treats out of the rolled dough.
  • Keep rerolling and cutting until all the dough is used up.
  • Bake for 12-20 minutes.
  • Cool on a wire rack.

Recipe 2

2 eggs

2 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour

1 cup mashed sweet potatoes

¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce

  • Shape into biscuits and bake for 40 minutes at 180 C

Recipe 3

1 cup oat flour or pulse rolled oats in food processor

1/4 cup smooth peanut butter (no artificial sweeteners or sugar)

1/4 cup crispy bacon, finely crumbled

1 banana (very ripe) mashed

1 large egg

  • Preheat your oven to 180C
  • Combine the oat flour, banana, peanut butter, egg, and crumbled bacon.
  • Roll out the dough mixture to about 6mm thick.
  • Cut out the biscuits and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and dry.

Make sure you don’t use any ingredients that can be harmful to dogs, such as the sweetener, Xylitol.
