Start with a cake covered in classic buttercream or icing. Buy ready-made from the supermarket or make your own (try our Classic Victoria Sponge Recipe). You can also make the buttercream or icing whatever colour you like, to go with the decoration you are planning. You could also decorate a ready-made/homemade cheesecake if sponge cake isn’t your thing.
- Simply pile fresh berries on top (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries), with a dusting of icing sugar and some mint leaves for a bit of contrasting colour. This one would be perfect to spruce up a plain cheesecake.
- This one is great for a kid’s party. Stick chocolate finger biscuits to the buttercream around the circumference of the cake and use more to create sections on the top. Fill each section with different lollies (it is a party after all!).
- Another one for a kids’ party. Cover the entire cake in coloured sprinkles (you can never have too many sprinkles!). Top with colourful candles and you’re all set.
- Flowers on top of a cake always look stylish. You can opt for artificial flowers such as peonies or bright gerberas, or if you have a garden full of blooms, use a few of those instead. Add colourful macarons (ready-made and perfect!) amongst the flowers as well.
- Pour over melted chocolate and let it drip down the sides. Add fresh berries to the top – or if you’re feeling really decadent, make them chocolate dipped berries!
- Grab a doyley or a piece of lace and lay it over your cake. Shake over edible glitter then remove the doyley/lace and you’ll have a simply stunning, sparkling pattern.
