How often should you sharpen your lawnmower blades?

It's probably more often than you think, and you could be damaging your lawn.

Your lawnmower blades should be sharpened after approximately 25 hours of use. This means that if it takes you about half an hour a week to mow your lawn, you should be having your blades sharpened once a year.

Mower blade sharpening should be part of your lawn maintenance plan. Blunt blades can shred your grass, causing frayed tips and discolouration.

Sharper blades on your mower means:

  • Faster mowing because of less resistance from the blades
  • Your grass is healthier with a neat cut, making it able to cope with disease
  • Straight cut edges will retain moisture
  • Lawns that are properly mowed will look lush, thick and have deeper roots.
