What causes cracked heels?

Cracked heels happen when the skin around the heel becomes dry and starts to split. It’s more than just a cosmetic thing - it can also be pretty painful!

Here are a few common culprits:

  • Being on your feet for long periods: If you’re always standing or walking, the pressure on your heels increases, making them more prone to cracking.

  • Wearing unsupportive footwear: Thongs and open-backed sandals won't give your heels the support they need.

  • Going barefoot: We all love the feeling of sand between our toes, but walking barefoot, especially on hard or hot surfaces, can cause your heels to dry out faster.

  • Hot showers: A long soak may feel great, but hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and more likely to crack.

  • Ageing: As we get older, our skin naturally loses moisture, making cracked heels more common.

  • Sun exposure: Just like the rest of your skin, your feet need protection too! Sun exposure can dry out your heels, making them more prone to cracking.

Luckily, cracked heels aren’t a life sentence! With a little TLC, you can keep your feet soft, smooth, and summer-ready.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

Keeping your feet well hydrated is the best way to stop cracks in their tracks. Look for thick creams, balms, or even good old coconut oil.

Wear supportive footwear

Enclosed shoes with a sturdy heel cup will give your feet the support they need. Save the thongs for short trips to the beach!

Go barefoot less often

Particularly on hot, hard surfaces like tiles or pavements, as this can make your heels even drier.

Pop on socks or stockings

They help lock in moisture, especially overnight. Plus, socks with fun prints are a great excuse to show off your personality!

Stay hydrated

Drinking water isn’t just good for your insides; it helps keep your skin soft and supple too. Bottoms up!

Soak your feet

Give your feet a little spa time by soaking them in lukewarm water (not hott!). This helps soften the skin, making it easier to manage.

Exfoliate regularly

Gently buff away dead skin with a pumice stone or foot scrub. It’s like a mini-makeover for your feet!

Avoid drying foot care products

Some foot care products contain alcohol, which can dry out your skin even more. Stick to moisturising products to keep those heels happy!

With these simple tips, you'll be back in those fabulous summer shoes, showing off your smooth heels in no time.
