How to stop your computer from getting hot and bothered!

Overheating is the arch enemy of your computer, so here are ways to keep it cool and avoid a meltdown!

  • Your computer needs room to breathe! Avoid putting it on soft surfaces such as blankets or pillows, as they can block the air vents. Choose a hard and flat surface instead and make sure there's some space around the computer for proper airflow.
  • Consider upgrading your computer's hardware. Adding more RAM or replacing your old hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD) can improve performance and reduce heat generation. (You’ll probably need a professional for this one!).
  • If you use a laptop, consider investing in a cooling pad with built-in fans. These nifty gadgets elevate your laptop and improve ventilation; plus, they often come with extra USB ports, so it's a win-win!
  • Adjust your computer's fan settings to keep things cool. You can access these settings through your computer's BIOS or by using software tools designed for fan control. Increase the fan speed during intensive tasks or hot weather, and let it slow down when things cool off. Just like a personal climate control for your computer!
  • Some programs can push your computer's temperature through the roof. Running resource-hungry applications like video editing software or games can make your computer work extra hard, generating more heat, so make sure you take regular breaks.
  • Hot and humid environments can make your computer struggle to stay cool. If possible, try to keep your it in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room, away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep your operating system, drivers, and firmware up to date. Manufacturers often release updates that include bug fixes and performance enhancements, including better thermal management. So, when it pops up, hit that ‘update’ button.
  • Keep your computer clean. Dust and dirt can build up inside your computer and block the fans and air vents, which can lead to overheating. Regularly clean your computer with compressed air or a soft cloth to help stop this from happening.
