Keeping reptiles as pets: What you need to know!

For animal lovers looking for a pet that's a little out of the ordinary, reptiles are a great choice. They can make great companions, but before you take the leap into ownership, there are a few things you need to know to make sure you're fully prepared for the commitment.

First things first, get to know the rules

  • It is illegal to take a reptile out of the wild to keep as a pet.
  • You must buy from a licensed reptile keeper.
  • Only some reptiles are approved for keeping.
  • Not all reptiles are approved for keeping, so make sure to check out the Government of Western Australia's list of approved reptiles for pets.
  • Before you buy a reptile, you need a fauna licence, and you must be over 18 to hold one. See reptile licences for more information.

Do lots of research

  • Different reptiles have different needs when it comes to housing, heating, and lighting, so make sure you do plenty of research before making a purchase.
  • Make sure you know exactly what food your chosen reptile needs and whether you're comfortable feeding them (for example, would you be happy feeding a dead mouse to a snake?).
  • Reptiles can have a long life, so make sure you're prepared for a long-term commitment!

Housing your reptile

Housing should be specific to their needs.

  • Heating is crucial, so it's important to provide a safe and regulated temperature using a thermostat and an overhead heat lamp, heat mat, heat cord, or heat tile.
  • Ventilation is also important, so make sure the enclosure has appropriate airflow in and out.
  • Depending on the type of reptile you get, you might need accessories like hiding spots, rocks, or branches for climbing.
  • Some reptiles need UVB light for their health, while others don't. Make sure to research their specific needs.
