The RSPCA estimates a lifetime cost of up to $25,000 (depending on the breed of dog you choose). They also estimate the first-year costs to be between $2,350 and $5,220.
Here’s a rough idea of where that money goes!
Adopting or buying
From $0 to $500 if you adopt, depending on the type of animal and its age or $500 to a few thousand dollars if you buy from a breeder.
Microchipping, vaccinations, and de-sexing
Up to $1,000 in the first year, or free if you adopt.
Vet expenses
Allow for around $450 each year, depending on your pet's health and age – this could rise as your dog gets older.
Pet essentials such as collar, bed, bowls, toys, and kennel
Up to $500 in the first year, then about $100 each year.
Flea, tick, and worming medications
$300 to $450 each year depending on the size of your dog.
Council registration
Between $30 and $190 per year.
Pet food
Up to $800 each year for premium dog food, plus treats.
Boarding kennels
Depends on location, time of year and length of stay. Can be between $25 to $50 a night
All figures are approximate and are purely a guide to what it may cost for dog ownership. They don’t include pet insurance, grooming or training.
If a puppy isn’t within your budget, consider adopting an older dog from an animal shelter such as the RSPCA, or fostering a dog until it finds its forever home.
