6 common causes of light bulb blowouts

An incandescent light bulb should last around 1500 hours, a CFL bulb should last 6000 – 8000 hours, and an LED lightbulb has an average lifespan of around 50,00 hours! If your bulbs seem to be blowing often, it could be one of these 6 reasons.

Poor quality

It’s so true that you get what you pay for. Cheap light bulbs are more likely to burn out faster compared to high-quality ones. Spend a little more and you’ll find your light bulbs last longer.

Voltage spike

A sudden voltage increase can be caused by your home’s electrical wiring or the supply grid, and even a minor spike can cause your bulb to blow out.

Vibration

If your bulb is near a ceiling fan or a door which is constantly being opened and closed, the vibration caused could cause the bulb to move and burn out faster.

Bad wiring

Badly installed wiring could be another culprit. This can cause current fluctuations and cause blowouts. It is critical that you have faulty wiring fixed as soon as possible as it can be a fire hazard.

Incorrect wattage

It could be as simple as a mismatch of fixture and the required bulb wattage. Too much wattage will cause more heat and a greater risk of bulb failure.

Poor connection

Sometimes, your light bulbs burn out due to a poor connection with the light fixture. This can be caused by how you screwed the bulb. If it’s loose, the connection may be going on and off, causing the bulb to blow. If it’s too tight, it can damage the bulb to fixture connection point.

If you are going through lightbulbs at a fast pace, it’s best to call an expert electrician to check things out. They will be able to find the source of the problem and provide the perfect solution.
