What causes low water pressure?

Ever turned on your tap, expecting a strong, steady stream of water, only to be met with a feeble trickle? Here are some common culprits.

Water maintenance works

First things first, check if there are any ongoing water works in your area. Visit the Water Corporation’s website or give them a ring to find out.

Too many taps running

Using multiple taps at the same time can affect water flow. Check to see that all other taps are turned off.

Old pipes

These can sometimes suffer from corrosion, which can create rough surfaces inside the pipes, disrupting the smooth flow of water. If your home has vintage plumbing, it might be worth checking for signs of corrosion, such as discoloured water.

Debris in your pipes

Over time, debris or mineral buildup in your pipes can narrow them, impacting water flow.

Water valve issues

Check your home’s water meter valve and make sure it’s open enough for a good water flow.

Water leaks

Sudden pressure drop? You might have a sneaky water leak. Check walls and floors for wet spots or signs of mould around your home.

Clogged fixtures

The fixtures can also cause low water pressure in a home when clogged. If a tap or showerhead is blocked, the water pressure will be limited as water tries to squeeze through.

Stressed hot water system

Your water heater might need a check-up if it can’t keep up with demand.

A sudden drop in water pressure can be your plumbing’s way of saying HELP! So, always get it checked out by a registered plumber.
