Flights

  • If you’re holidays are flexible, avoid peak times (such as school holidays and if it’s the summer season where you want to travel).
  • The earlier you book, in general, the cheaper your flight will be.
  • Whoever you book your flights with, check their cancellation, or change policies – if your plans change, you could lose most of the cost of your flight in fees.
  • And never skimp on travel insurance. It will save you money in the event of unforeseen circumstances and give you peace of mind, which is priceless.

Stuff

Try to borrow rather than buy. Ask family and friends or join your local Buy Nothing Facebook group. This is especially handy for things such as luggage and ski gear.  Suitcase packing tips

  • Check out your local op shops – it’s amazing what you can find these days.
  • Don’t buy travel sized toiletries – you are paying more for less.
  • Don't use global roaming on your phone. Turn off mobile data and use Wi-Fi to stay in touch or buy a local sim card instead.

Accommodation

  • Research accommodation with cooking facilities to save money on eating out.
  • When you do decide to eat out, find out where the locals go, rather than sticking to tourist areas.
  • City centre hotels are always more expensive than those that are a bit further away. Check out public transport and if it’s easy to get around, consider stay a little further out.

Getting around

  • Try and use the local public transport. These days you can research most things online and be prepared before you get there.
  • If you are hiring a car, take a look at our money saving fuel tips.
  • Book tours, trips, and experiences before you leave to take advantage of any pre-booking discounts.
  • Go on a walking tour, they’re inexpensive and a fabulous way of seeing the sights.
  • Talk to people you meet along the way – you may discover interesting places to see away from tourist centres.

And don’t forget to …

Dispose of any food you might have in your bag before you re-enter Australia – or you could find yourself with a massive fine for carrying prohibited items.
