Paving around your pool?

Ah, the great Aussie backyard pool—a refreshing oasis when the sun’s blazing and you need to cool off. But before you dive in, let’s chat about something that’s just as important as the water itself; the pavers around your pool.

Non-slip properties

Splashing around in the pool is all fun and games until someone takes a tumble. That’s why it’s crucial to pick pavers with good grip. Wet feet and slippery surfaces are not a good mix, so make sure your pavers are up to the task of keeping everyone safe.

Sunlight/shade

Before choosing your pavers, take a note of how much sun your pool gets throughout the day.

Nothing ruins a pool day faster than hopping around on scorching hot pavers. Ouch! Light-coloured options like travertine, limestone, and concrete are your friends here. They stay cooler under the sun, so you can walk barefoot without tears.

Dark pavers might look chic, but they can be real scorchers.
Avoid dark colours if it is in full sun for most of the day, as these will absorb and hold onto heat, and can burn your feet. Darker colours are only recommended for pools that are in moderate to full shade for most of the day.

Durability

Your poolside pavers will be facing some tough challenges, including chemicals, salt, chlorine, and all kinds of weather, so choose ones that can take the heat, the sun, and the splashes without losing their cool.

Cost

Budgeting is a biggie. Once you’ve got your dream look in mind, you’ll need to find pavers that match both your style and your wallet. Don’t worry; there are plenty of stylish options that won’t break the bank. Mixing in some greenery between pavers can also cut costs while adding a bit of flair.

Complementary colours

With so many styles, materials, and colours to choose from, it’s important to think about how your pavers will fit in with the rest of your backyard. When the colours and textures work together, you’ll create a space that’s not just functional but fabulous

Popular pool paving choices include:

  • Travertine: elegant and sophisticated and cooler underfoot than granite. They release heat effectively and come in a range of colours.

  • Limestone: nice and cool as it reflects heat and is comfy underfoot.

  • Exposed aggregate: not as cool as limestone (heat wise, not style wise!) and a great option if you don't like the look of stone.

  • Porcelain: low maintenance - they don't need to be sealed and are easier to keep clean than concrete or natural stone.

  • Concrete: great value for money and come in a huge range of colours and finishes. Best sealed straight after laying for low maintenance.
