How to prepare your cat for a vet appointment

We all know taking our pets to the vet can be a little nerve-wracking for both us and our furry friends. But don't worry, there are some things you can do to make the whole experience a little smoother.

Whether it's for a routine check-up or a specific issue, your cat may need a little extra care and attention before you go to the vet.

  • It’s important to get your cat comfortable with their carrier. Most cats associate this with trips to the vet, try to make it a positive experience. Leave the carrier out in a familiar and comfortable space, add a soft blanket, and even leave treats and a favourite toy inside to encourage your cat to explore and get used to it, if they’re not already.
  • You can also use pheromone sprays or collars, which can help to relax your cat. You can also talk to your cat in a soothing voice or even play some calming music to help ease any anxiety they may be feeling. How to understand your cat's behaviour
  • In the lead-up to your vet appointment, regularly handle your cat's paws, ears, and mouth, as these are areas that may be checked during a vet visit. This will help your cat feel more comfortable being touched by strangers.
  • Before the visit, make sure your cat is up to date with their vaccinations (unless you are taking them to the vet to get their vaccinations, obviously!).
  • Make a list of any symptoms you are concerned about as you might forget once you are there. Signs you should never ignore from your cat
  • Cats can pick up on your emotions, so try to stay calm and relaxed during the visit. Speak softly and reassure your cat that everything is okay.
  • After the visit, reward your cat with a treat or some extra love and attention to make a visit to the vet a positive experience.

Taking your cat to the vet may not be their (or your) favourite activity, but with a little preparation and care, you can make the experience as stress-free as possible. Remember, your cat's health is important, so don't hesitate to schedule regular check-ups and follow-up visits as recommended by your vet.
