How to recycle your old and broken toys

It's a great time to get rid of old toys to make room for any new ones that Santa brought. But no one wants to see Bluey or the guys from Paw Patrol go to landfill! Here's how you can give them a second life, even if they are broken.

Kids can quickly grow out of their toys or love them to death! Up until now, the only free option for over-loved or broken toys was to put them in the bin. But not anymore!

Last year, Big W and Terracycle partnered to create Toys for Joy, a free recycling program for all brands of old or broken toys - it was rolled out across a few Big W stores and was a raging success, so it is now available in all Big W stores across Australia. So, if you have excess toys lying around the house that are not suitable for donating or passing on to friends, you can now drop them off at selected Big W. The materials will be recycled and go towards making new products, including play equipment for kids.

Please remove all batteries and make sure all items are dry. See the lists below for what can and cannot be recycled.

YES (all brands)

  • Plastic toys
  • Metal toys
  • Electronic toys with batteries removed

NO

But remember, if your toys are still in good condition, please donate them to your local charity shop, so they can be loved again!
