How to stay healthy this flu season

With the warm weather hanging around, flu season may seem like a long way off, but it’s on the doorstep demanding to be let in! There are some really simple things you can do to reduce the risk of catching the flu virus.

Because of COVID, we’re all familiar the benefits of regular hand washing throughout the day. This may seem obvious, but it can be easy to slip your mind – unless you’re going to the bathroom!  Try to wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds and dry them thoroughly, especially after being in public spaces.  

It's also a good idea to avoid touching your face as much as possible. Our hands come into contact with all sorts of germs, and our faces are an easy entry point for them to infect us. So, try to keep your hands away from your nose, mouth, and eyes.

You should also:

  • Cover your mouth with the crook of your arm when coughing or sneezing. If you do use your hand, make sure you wash them hands afterwards to prevent spreading any germs.  
  • Throw used tissues in the bin immediately!
  • Avoid sharing cups, plates, cutlery, and towels with other people if you can.
  • Clean surfaces such as your keyboard, phone and door handles regularly.

  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids keeps you hydrated, keeping your body functioning at its best.

Finally, consider getting a flu vaccination each year. This is because your immunity is strongest for 3-4 months after being vaccinated and flu strains can change over time. Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the most common strains of the flu and can significantly reduce your risk of getting sick. It's never too late to get vaccinated, so talk to your doctor or pharmacist to see if a flu vaccine is right for you.
