Time-saving cooking shortcuts (without cutting taste)

Even if you love cooking, there’s nothing wrong with taking a few shortcuts to save time (especially mid-week when things can be a bit frantic).

  1. Making meatballs for dinner? Rather than start from scratch, buy some high-quality sausages, remove the skins, and make the sausage meat into balls. Dinner is done!
  1. Use pre-made, frozen or chilled pastry rather than making your own for a recipe – seriously, no one will notice the difference!
  1. Making something that calls for pesto? Rather than grinding basil and pine nuts together, go for a ready-made sauce. There are some great tasting brands available these days.
  1. Frozen, chopped onions are great to have in your freezer for when you are short of time. As a bonus there will be no watery eyes, or smelly hands.
  1. While it’s nice to make your own stock – it can add hours to your meal prep! Grab a high-quality, pre-made stock; your finished meal will be just as tasty, and you’ll have saved yourself so much time.
  1. Opting for pre-minced or crushed garlic and ginger is another great short cut that won’t affect the taste of your finished dish.
  1. For a superfast kids’ dinner, just throw a pre-made tomato sauce (just check it’s not loaded with salt and sugar) onto some pasta, sprinkle on some cheese and it’s ready!
  1. Make frozen, pre-cut veggies your friend! They are probably fresher than some ‘fresh’ vegetables you will find in your supermarket and there’s no waste.
  1. Rather than hacking away at cabbage and carrots to make coleslaw – use a pre-shredded mix – and then all you have to do is add mayo. Great for a BBQ.
  1. And for the speediest and easiest dinner of all, buy a ready roast chicken and serve with salad (and your pre-shredded coleslaw!). You can even put it all in a wrap (also ready-made!).
