Something simple

Sometimes the check engine light can come on because of something as small as a loose fuel cap When the fuel cap isn’t on tight, it can mess with your car’s fuel system, causing the light to pop on.

Your spark plugs have lost their sparkle

If they’re worn out or not working right, it can trigger the 'check engine' light. Faulty spark plugs can lead to reduced engine performance or even damage the engine if left unchecked. So, if your car’s been feeling a bit sluggish and the light is on, this might be your culprit.

Your oxygen sensor might be unhappy

One of the top reasons your engine light decides to make an appearance could be the oxygen sensor. If it's not working properly, your engine won’t be as fuel-efficient as it should be, and this could ultimately damage things like your catalytic converter.

Faulty mass airflow sensor

The mass airflow sensor monitors the amount of air entering the engine to help determine how much fuel to inject. If it’s not working properly, you’ll likely see the 'check engine' light. If your car is hard to start or stalls frequently, this sensor might be to blame.

Catalytic converter trouble

This one’s a bit more serious – the catalytic converter is a part of your car’s exhaust system that reduces harmful emissions. When it starts to fail, it can cause the check engine light to come on, as well as affect your car’s fuel efficiency and performance.

While the check engine light can seem scary, it’s not always a sign of imminent doom. From loose fuel caps to oxygen sensors, there are plenty of reasons that little light might come on. But whatever the cause, it’s always a good idea to get it checked out by your local mechanic, for your peace of mind and to make sure your car keeps running efficiently.
