Keeping fit for free

You don’t need a pricey gym pass or fancy equipment to stay active. In fact, some of the best ways to move more, feel better and build a healthier routine won’t cost you a thing. Here are some simple, no-cost ways to keep fit that you can slide into everyday life.

Walk with purpose

Walking is about as simple as it gets – and it’s brilliant for your body and mind. Head out to run errands, wander around your neighbourhood or stretch your legs on a break from work. Want to ramp it up? Pick up the pace, take the hilly route or add some stairs.

Use what’s around you

Your surroundings can be your gym. Parks, footpaths and even playgrounds offer plenty of workout potential. Try squats in the backyard, lunges along a pathway or push-ups against a wall or sturdy railing. It’s all about making the most of what’s right in front of you.

Try bodyweight moves

You don’t need dumbbells to get stronger. Squats, lunges, push-ups, planks and sit-ups can all be done at home. Start small, build up slowly, and remember – being consistent beats going all-out once in a blue moon.

Stretch it out

Stretching keeps you flexible and helps with posture and circulation. You can do it while watching TV, first thing in the morning or before bed. If you want something a little more guided, there are loads of free yoga and Pilates videos online.

Turn chores into exercise

Vacuuming, scrubbing, digging or mowing – housework and gardening can be sneaky workouts. Put in a little extra energy and you’ll be able to tick a few things off your ‘to-do’ list at the same time. Win-win.

Dance like nobody’s watching

Crank up your favourite tunes and move however you like. Dancing is great cardio, a natural stressbuster (and guaranteed to lift your mood). No choreography needed – just have fun with it.

Set easy goals

You don’t need fancy gadgets or trackers. Jot down simple goals like walking three times a week, holding a plank for a minute or doing a handful of push-ups each day. Seeing progress – even in a notebook – is a great boost.

Make it social

Fitness is more fun with company. Invite a friend for a walk, plan a weekend hike or set up a casual running buddy system. You don’t need a club – just someone who’s keen to get moving too.

Keep it simple

At the end of the day, the best exercise is the one you enjoy. Find what feels good, make it part of your routine and let it become second nature.
