5 foods you should never pour down your sink

While it may be easy and tempting, washing these items down the sink is asking for a plumbing disaster!

Grease and fat

Grease and fat turn to liquid when they are hot and solidify when they are cold. Even if you wash these down your sink drain with hot water – they will solidify when they cool down. The best thing to do is to wipe the pan clean with kitchen paper and put it in the bin.

Oils

These are super-cloggers and mix with other debris to create sludge. Allow your cooking oil to cool if heated and dispose of it in a container, in your waste bin. This includes salad dressings and mayonnaise.

Coffee grounds and tea leaves

These expand when water is added and mix with oil or grease already coating the pipes - not good! The same goes for loose leaf tea leaves.

Flour

Did you know you can make glue with flour and water? This is one of the reasons why it's not a good idea to wash it down your sink! The last thing you want is for it to stick to your pipes, causing a blockage.

Rice & pasta

A few grains of rice won’t do any harm, surely? If you've ever cooked rice before (which you probably have), then you know that it expands in water. So just imagine what happens if you wash rice down the drain and then turn on the water – blockage! The result will be the same if pasta goes down your sink drain.
