- If you’re having your timber floors sanded before you sell, have them sealed with a glossy finish. This will reflect any light in the room and give the impression it’s brighter than it really is.
- If you have floor coverings such as carpet or tiles, keep them a light colour, and make sure any tiles have a gloss finish.
- Painting the walls in shades of white, cream, beige and even pale grey can be the key to making any room feel brighter and lighter.
- Make sure your windows are clean! Your house won’t be light if the sun can’t get through dirty windows.
- Hang a mirror opposite a window. This will reflect the light coming through the window and bring more light into the room.
- Declutter! Less clutter will make a room feel brighter and more spacious.
- For rooms that don’t need block-out curtains for sleep, go for lightweight sheer curtains, or blinds.
- Avoid heavy, dark wood furniture and opt for light or white pieces instead.
- For doors that face outdoor areas such as gardens, balconies, you can replace solid doors with those that have glass panels, or partial glass panels to let in more light.
- Prune any trees or shrubs that are out of control and blocking the sunlight.
