  1. If you’re having your timber floors sanded before you sell, have them sealed with a glossy finish. This will reflect any light in the room and give the impression it’s brighter than it really is.
  1. If you have floor coverings such as carpet or tiles, keep them a light colour, and make sure any tiles have a gloss finish.
  1. Painting the walls in shades of white, cream, beige and even pale grey can be the key to making any room feel brighter and lighter.
  1. Make sure your windows are clean! Your house won’t be light if the sun can’t get through dirty windows.
  1. Hang a mirror opposite a window. This will reflect the light coming through the window and bring more light into the room.
  1. Declutter! Less clutter will make a room feel brighter and more spacious.
  1. For rooms that don’t need block-out curtains for sleep, go for lightweight sheer curtains, or blinds.
  1. Avoid heavy, dark wood furniture and opt for light or white pieces instead.
  1. For doors that face outdoor areas such as gardens, balconies, you can replace solid doors with those that have glass panels, or partial glass panels to let in more light.
  1. Prune any trees or shrubs that are out of control and blocking the sunlight.
