You have a lovely picture that would look even better in a frame – it’s got to be easy to DIY, surely? Maybe not. DIY picture framing can be a fun and rewarding project, but it can also be a bit tricky if you're not careful. Here are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind:

Do

  • Measure twice, cut once. It's a classic piece of advice for a reason! Double-check your measurements before you make any cuts to ensure that everything fits together perfectly.
  • Stack everything that will be put into the frame BEFORE actually making it (glass, art, border backing). Then measure the depth of this whole unit. This is the depth required for your framing materials.
  • Invest in good quality tools. A high-quality mat cutter, straight edge, and saw will make your life much easier and help you achieve more precise cuts.
  • Choose acid-free materials. Acid-free matting and backing will help protect your artwork or photograph from discoloration and damage over time.
  • Experiment with different matting and framing options. Don't be afraid to get creative and try out different colours, textures, and styles to find the perfect frame for your piece.
  • Wear proper safety gear. Safety glasses, gloves, and a mask can all help protect you from dust and debris.

Don’t

  • Don’t use cheap, low-quality materials. Cheap framing materials can warp, fade, and discolour over time, causing damage to your artwork or photograph.
  • Don’t rush. Take your time and work carefully to avoid mistakes and ensure a professional-looking finish.
  • DIY picture framing can be a fun and rewarding project, but it's important to take your time and use the right materials and tools to ensure a professional-looking finish. If you’re unsure – let a professional framer take care of it for you!
