The difference between dry and steam carpet cleaning

You’ve decided to have your carpets professionally cleaned - but do you need steam cleaning or dry cleaning?

Dry Cleaning

  • This method generally begins with vacuuming the carpets to remove any dry dirt.
  • The carpet is treated with a dry cleaning solution to break down any oily residue.
  • Special cleaning pads are used to remove the solvent and clean the carpet’s surface. The pads are soaked in hot water with a conditioning rinse and are placed onto a rotary machine.
  • The machine spins the pad around, releasing dirt from the carpet.
  • This method can target more stains than some processes.
  • One of the main benefits of dry cleaning is that it uses much less water than steam cleaning and your carpets will be dry and ready to walk on within an hour.
  • Carpet dry cleaning solutions can remove more stains than other cleaning processes.
  • Not as effective on deep down soils and stubborn stains as steam cleaning.

Steam Cleaning

  • Steam cleaning is the process of cleaning carpets using hot water.
  • A pre vacuum removes any dry dirt in the carpet.
  • Usually, a detergent pre-spray is applied to the carpet first. This will ensure the water can penetrate deeply into the carpet fibres prior to the water extraction.
  • A water extraction machine sprays hot water onto the carpet and then sucks the pre-spray, dirt, and soils back up with it. It’s a bit like a big vacuum cleaner that uses water instead of air.
  • The process leaves the carpet wet, and it can take a few hours before the carpet is dry enough to walk on.  You will generally have to keep off the carpet until it dries.
  • Steam cleaning offers a much deeper and thorough clean as it removes deep down dirt and grit that can damage your carpets. It’s also more effective at removing dust mites and bacteria.

If you can’t decide which will be best for your carpets, why not alternate between the two for the best of both worlds!
