10 easy ways to cut down your use of plastic

It’s great if you’re recycling your plastic rubbish correctly, but the best way of helping our environment is to avoid buying products with plastic packaging in the first place.

  1. Take your own mesh bags for loose fruit and vegetables or just put your items loose in your trolley.
  2. If you are a family that uses a lot of milk, you could buy fewer, larger containers; for example, 2 x 3 litre bottles rather than 3 x 2 litre bottles.
  3. Buy concentrated fabric softener rather than a new plastic container each time.
  4. Buy laundry powder in a cardboard container rather than liquid in plastic bottles (Or you could make your own laundry liquid - see this week’s Handy Home Hint!)
  5. Use rechargeable batteries.
  6. Get out the cookbooks rather than buying pre-packaged meals (and there are lots of simple recipes on your local Little Aussie website).
  7. Buy your meat from a butcher rather than the packaged alternatives.
  8. Grow your own herbs.
  9. Buy a reuseable razor rather than disposable ones.
  10. And remember to take bags from home when you go shopping.

Decorate your cloth shopping bags

Why have boring shopping bags when you can let your creativity fly on a different canvas.

Use fabric paint or fabric markers (like 'Stained by Sharpie' pens) to make your shopping totes your own.

This can be a fun project with the kids, where they can paint, sew or glue on embellishments.
