Version 1

Materials

  • Glass jar or bottle with a lid – the larger the jar, the more glow sticks you will need.
  • Glow sticks*
  • Iridescent glitter (this is translucent rather than opaque and lets the glow shine through)**

*The contents of the glow sticks are not toxic, but they can irritate the skin if touched, so wear plastic gloves to be on the safe side – and don’t let the young ones touch the liquid.

** We found plastic free/biodegradable glitter online from Etsy and Glitter Haven

Instructions

  1. Crack the glow stick to make it glow. Let your kids choose whatever colour they like, or you could even mix a couple of colours in the same jar.
  1. Once the glow stick is glowing at full strength, cut off the end of the stick with a sharp pair of scissors and pour the liquid into the jar. Make sure there is enough liquid to coat the sides of the jar.
  1. Add a little iridescent glitter.
  1. Securely seal the jar and gently shake until all the sides are covered. If you haven’t used enough glow stick liquid or glitter, open it up and add more. Continue shaking until the sides of the jar are covered. Then it’s best to glue the lid closed.

Then, close the blinds, curtains or shutters and watch them glow. They make a good night light as the light gently fades (just like glow sticks do) while your child falls asleep.

Version 2

Materials

  • Clear jar or bottle with lid
  • Clear hair gel – you’ll need enough to fill the jar
  • Glitter glue
  • Glow-in-the-dark-paint
  • Glow-in-the-dark mini stars

Instructions

  1. Squirt a little glitter glue onto the bottom of the jar, followed by a squirt of glow-in-the-dark paint.
  1. Add the hair gel to the jar until it’s almost full, put on the lid and shake to combine. If it’s very thick, you can add a little water.
  1. Add your glow-in-the-dark-stars. The thickness of the hair gel stops the stars from falling to the bottom, so they float.
  1. Glue the lid on the jar and you’re done!
