Greaseproof paper

As the name suggests, this paper is designed to resist grease and oils. It's great for wrapping greasy foods, such as burgers, fish and chips, or sandwiches. Greaseproof paper is not heat resistant so it shouldn’t be used in the microwave or oven.

Baking paper (sometimes known as parchment paper)

This paper is coated with a thin layer of silicone making it non-stick and heat resistant. It's perfect for lining cake tins and baking trays, as it prevents food from sticking and allows for easy clean-up. You can also use it to wrap foods, such as chicken or fish, for baking or steaming. It won’t burn in the oven.

Wax paper

This paper has a thin coating of wax on both sides, making it moisture-proof, but it isn’t heat-proof, so it shouldn't be used in the oven or microwave. In fact, at high temperatures, the wax will melt and the paper itself can catch fire. However, it's great for wrapping sandwiches, cheese, or other foods that you want to keep fresh.

So, there you have it! The three types of paper that are commonly used in the kitchen so you can choose the right one and avoid a kitchen disaster!
