How to dispose of an old mattress

Here’s how you can keep (most of it) it out of landfill.

January 12, 2023

Mattresses are big, bulky items that take up valuable and expensive space in landfill; approximately 1.8 million mattresses are thrown away each year (around 54,000 tonnes) with 37,000 tonnes going into landfill.

Because of their size and materials, mattresses can cause long term problems, including resurfacing due to their ‘buoyant’ nature, subsidence and even fires. So, recycling your old mattress is a much better option.

Here are three options to dispose of your old mattress

Soft Landing

They recycle up to 75% of all mattress components and choose recycling methods with the smallest environmental footprint possible. They aim to:

  • Avoid recycling methods that reduce cost at the expense of the environment
  • Avoid recycling methods that are big users of power
  • Choose methods that maximise re-use of materials
  • Keep by-products in Australia, supporting local companies and reducing transport mileage

You can book a mattress pick up at softlanding.com.au (there is a charge for pick up)

1800-Got-Junk? Perth

They will pick up and dispose of your old mattresses by recycling or donating to a charity where possible.

You can book a mattress collection at www.1800gotjunk.com.au (there is a charge for pick up)

Recycle My Mattress

They work with manufacturers and retailers, so that when your new mattress is delivered, your old one is taken away.

You can find a participating retailer at recyclemymattress.com.au
