Avoid tarnishing

  • Don’t leave your jewellery on chemically treated surfaces or on wood which can stain or speed up the tarnishing process.
  • Moisture can also cause tarnishing, so when storing, put it in a zip lock bag and squeeze out all the air before sealing.
  • You can also store your jewellery with chalk or silica gel sachets to absorb excess moisture.
  • Don’t swim in a pool wearing your jewellery. Long or frequent exposure to chlorine can cause the metal components to deteriorate or tarnish.
  • Wipe your jewellery with an anti-tarnish cloth before storing. This will make sure any lingering moisture, oils or dust is gone. Are you storing your jewellery correctly?

Keep away from lotions, sprays, and chemicals

  • Don’t wear your jewellery then apply lotions (such as hand cream when wearing rings).
  • Don’t spray perfume or hairspray onto jewellery – the chemicals in these products can damage the surface of your pearls and other delicate or porous gems (such garnet, topaz, or amethyst). Put your jewellery on last.
  • When cleaning wear gloves or remove your jewellery. Many household cleaners contain ammonia which can be too harsh for delicate gems or vintage pieces. Chlorine bleach can also damage gold alloys (such as rose gold and white gold).

Avoid too much sunlight

  • The colour of gemstones will become dull and even darken when exposed to too much light and heat.
  • Pearls will bleach under extreme exposure to light.
