How to make a nebula jar

Also known as a galaxy jar, this is a great kid’s activity – it’s easy to do and you can incorporate a bit of science into the process (but only if you want to!)

You will need

A clear jar with a lid – a mason jar is perfect

Water

Crystal flakes or glitter

Acrylic paints – ‘spacey’ colours such as blue, purple, orange – you decide, but use at least 2 different colours for the best effect.

Cotton wool balls (lots and lots as they will squish down with the water and paint)

To make your nebula/galaxy jar

  1. Fill your jar 1/3 full of water
  1. Add several drops of the paint – put the lid on the jar and shake to mix
  1. Add a bit of fine glitter to the water/paint
  1. Pull the cotton wool balls apart slightly and add them to the water until the bottom of the jar is filled. Press them down into the water with a spoon
  1. Fill another third of the jar with water and add more paint (a different colour)
  1. Repeat steps 2-4 so the colours start to blend slightly
  1. Fill the final 1/3 of the jar with another colour paint and repeat steps 2-4

If you are using two colours, fill your jar in two halves

If you are using 4 colours, fill your jar ¼ at a time
