You’ll need
250g sodium bicarbonate (250g) (also known as bicarb soda)
125g cornflour (this is what gives the clay its bright white colour)
180ml water
*Food colouring – optional. To colour your clay, you can add a few drops of food colouring to the water before mixing, or leave your clay white and paint it with acrylic paint when it’s dried.
Non-stick saucepan (the non-stickiness helps the ingredients to mix smoothly)
Wooden spoon
Bowl or baking tray
Tea towel
Cling film and air-tight container for any leftovers
Make your clay!
-
Grab your non-stick pan and mix the sodium bicarbonate and cornflour together. Pour in the water and mix thoroughly.
-
Place the saucepan on low heat and keep stirring. You'll know it's ready when it starts pulling away from the sides and looks a bit like mashed potatoes! (Make sure that no one has a taste!)
-
Then, take it off the heat.
-
Transfer the clay mixture to a bowl or spread it on a baking sheet. Cover it with a tea towel and let it cool completely.
-
Once it's cooled, keep kneading the mixture until you get smooth, pliable air-dry clay.
Start creating!
Roll out your clay and use cookie cutters to make fun shapes, or just mould it with your hands. The possibilities are endless! When you are happy with your creation, allow it to dry overnight.
Wrap any leftover clay in cling film and store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
Once dry, your creations can be sanded, painted, or decorated - it's up to you!
Keep crafting and creating!
