Reduce Reuse Recycle

Join your local Buy Nothing group and ‘give where you live’

You may have seen Buy Nothing groups popping up on Facebook. They are a way to reduce waste and recycle items that you don’t need anymore, by giving them to someone in your local community who would find them useful.

Each local group is an independent Facebook group, managed by local volunteers.

The Buy Nothing motto is ‘give where you live’ and is intended to reduce waste at a local level and build resilient community connections. The group lets you:

  • Offer any goods or services you’d like to share, loan, or give away.
  • Request any goods or services you’d like to share, borrow, or keep.

You simply find your local group and join up. Then post any items that you would like to give away and wait for other members to request the items. If you’re trying to declutter and/or save money, your local Buy Nothing group is a great way to reach your goals. Plus, you get to know people in your community that you might never have had the chance to meet before.

And if your local community doesn’t have a Buy Nothing group yet – why not start one yourself.

The basic rules of Buy Nothing

  • Always treat fellow group members with respect.
  • You must live within the boundaries of the group that you wish to join.
  • You can only join one Buy Nothing group.
  • Post anything you’d like to give away, lend, or share among neighbours.
  • Ask for anything you’d like to receive for free or borrow.
  • If you get more than one request, it is up to you who you gift the item to.
  • Some people raffle the item to make it fair, others prefer to give the items to friends if they request it.
  • No buying, selling or swapping is allowed. The aim is to gift freely expecting nothing in return.
  • You can also offer gifts of self, such as babysitting or help in the garden; gifts of talent such as cooking lessons and gifts of time such as play dates for kids or walking groups.
