FOGO No-Nos!

If your council provides a FOGO (Food Organics, Garden Organics) bin, here’s what to Keep Out. Some items will be obvious, others not so much!

FOGO bin - Bright green lid

Items which do NOT belong in your FOGO bin (and where they should go instead):

  • Plastic fruit stickers – peel them off and pop them in your general waste bin

  • BBQ charcoal and ash from outdoor fires etc. – once cooled, they belong in the general waste

  • Large branches – green waste bulk verge collection

  • Candles – even if they are beeswax, they must go into the general waste bin

  • Cardboard boxes – recycling bin 

  • Cigarette butts – general waste bin 

  • Aluminium and plastic coffee pods – coffee grounds can go into your FOGO bin – the pods can’t. They need specialist recycling or go into the general waste bin.

  • Compostable nappies – despite the name, these aren’t accepted in your FOGO bin – so put them in your general waste bin.

  • Corks – general waste bin

  • Cotton buds and cotton wool – general waste bin

  • Disposable coffee cups – general waste bin

  • Dirt and soil – specialist recycling

  • Disposable nappies – general waste

  • Egg cartons – recycling bin

  • Envelopes – recycling bin (including the ones with the plastic 'window')

  • Gift wrap/paper – recycling bin

  • Greaseproof paper – general waste bin

  • Kitty litter – general waste

  • Medicines – none of your kerbside bins - return to your local pharmacy for disposal

  • Soiled newspaper – general waste bin

  • Cooking oil – general waste bin or specialist recycling

  • Clean pizza boxes – recycling bin 

  • Soiled cardboard takeaway food containers – general waste

  • Vacuum cleaner dust – general waste

  • Toothbrushes – plastic, biodegradable, compostable, electric – general waste

  • Wooden icy pole sticks – general waste bin

  • Toilet paper inserts/tubes – recycling bin

  • Rags – general waste bin

  • Sawdust – general waste bin

  • Small, dead animals (such as rats or mice) – general waste bin

  • Egg cartons – recycling bin

  • Fertiliser – Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) - Specialist recycling

  • Garden chemicals – HHW specialist recycling 

  • Meat trays - general waste bin

Less obvious items which CAN go into your FOGO bin:

  • Feathers

  • Animal hair 

  • Human hair 

  • Paper towels – clean or food soiled 

  • Food soiled paper 

  • Shredded paper – small amounts

  • Cooking fat – cold

  • Soiled pizza boxes 

  • Animal droppings

  • Bamboo utensils and skewers

  • Bones and shells

  • Soiled tissues

  • Manure
