By now, we’ve all got a pretty good idea about what can and can’t be recycled in our yellow-lid recycling bin. But did you know that there are some items that should never be put in your general waste bin?

The contents of our general waste bins go to landfill – so it’s important that certain items are kept out for health, economic and environmental reasons.

Hazardous Household Waste (HHW)

This can leach into the soil and groundwater, posing serious environmental and health risks.

  • Brake fluid, transmission fluid & car parts

  • Acids

  • Aerosol cans

  • Household batteries & car batteries

  • Garden fertilisers

  • Paint & empty paint cans & paint stripper/thinner

  • Cleaning products & their containers including bleach & ammonia

  • Disposable cigarette lighters

  • Hair colouring products & containers

  • Household fire extinguishers

  • Shoe polish

  • Pool chemicals

  • Smoke alarms

  • Nail polish

  • Lightbulbs or fluorescent tubes

  • Cockroach baits

  • Mouse & rat baits

  • Fly & cockroach sprays

Construction or demolition waste

  • Asbestos (obviously!)

  • Bricks

  • Concrete

  • Tiles

  • Soil

E-waste

Electronics contain valuable metals like gold, silver, and copper, as well as hazardous substances like lead and mercury. Proper recycling of e-waste recovers valuable materials and prevents environmental contamination.
